Pterostyrax

The deciduous trees or large shrubs are native to China and Japan. P. hispida, commonly known as the Epaulette Tree or Wisteria Tree, can be grown as a bush with a height of up to 12 feet or a tree, growing up to 50 feet high. The Epaulette Tree is covered in oblong leaves up to 8 inches in length. These trees begin to blossom when they are 8 to 10 feet high. In early summer, fragrant, creamy white flowers are borne in suspended clusters 4 to 9 inches long. These are follo wed by fuzzy seedpods that persist on the branches well into the winter.


Pot Cultivation


These trees grow in climates having not too harsh winters. They need full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Trees that are bought balled and burlapped should be planted in the spring. Pruning should be done in the winter. This consists of removing low side branches.


Propagation


Seeds may be sown or the branches may be layered.
